It's been quite awhile since I've written, hasn't it my darlings? Yes it has. Too long. You do forgive me don't you? It's been a busy..anyway, I'm sure you forgive me, so ONWARD!
*This* is what I've been working on my darlings! I heard there was an alumni show coming up at SUNY Ulster (the college I went to before New Paltz), so I decided I *must* make something to submit. **SPOILER ALERT** I WAS ACCEPTED! Ah, darlings, you have no idea how excited I was last night when I received the email!
I must tell you, The Gutenberg Project is indispensable! When I heard the show was coming up to honor SUNY Ulster's 50th Anniversary, I decided to mix my love of design and book binding, and create a book to submit.
The part that took the longest was designing/typesetting it. Once I had settled on "Phantasmagoria and Other Poems" by Lewis Carroll, I got to work. Between my day job and life getting in the way, the typesetting was a little slow going, but I got it done. And I am actually quite satisfied with how it came out. Of course I decided to go with the coptic binding..it is my favorite after all. Considering Lewis Carroll's work is classic, I opted to go with LEATHER book cloth. Yes, I said leather. REAL leather. Not that cheap plastic crap that looks like leather.
Hardest thing about this lovely volume? Wrapping the book board. Even though it's very thin leather, it does not like to conform to the board very easily. SO to get it to stick, I had to press each edge until the glue tacked enough to hold. Ugh..I get a headache thinking about it. Next time I'm using strong dry adhesive. But after all the work, it was totes worth it. I especially love the end-papers. Red marbled paper.. (*drools*) SOOOO, if you want to see more pictures, visit my Flickr, and check out my Handmade Books set. Enjoy the book porn darlings!
